State and local taxes can serve as a tool to hold special interests and bad actors financially accountable. As a Supervisor, I stood against Big Soda and Big Tobacco to fight for the health and well-being of my constituents. When I spearheaded San Francisco’s Soda Tax, which passed with an overwhelming 62% support, I helped generate millions in tax revenue to help fund public health and nutrition education programs for kids and families. On the Board of Equalization, I will advocate for tax policies that improve public health for all Californians.

As a Board of Equalization member, I will:

- Champion tax policies that makes California safer and healthier for all

- Support proactive public health initiatives, similar to last year’s legislation that offered taxpayers a chance to donate a portion of their tax return to reduce the rape kit backlog

My record of success on public health:

- Sponsored legislation that expanded an existing San Francisco law making it illegal to sell firearms with magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds

- Took on Big Soda and passed the sugar-sweetened beverage tax, which will generate over $14 million annually to fund public health and physical education programs in San Francisco

- Championed legislation to ban flavored tobacco products, because Big Tobacco was disproportionately advertising to young people, communities of color, and LGBTQ individuals
