Fiscal Responsibility

While leading the Board of Supervisors’ Budget and Finance Committee, I was at the forefront of major financial decisions on behalf of the City and County of San Francisco, including overseeing billions of dollars in pensions and transportation funding. Although the new reforms now grant the power to collect and spend taxes to the Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the Board of Equalization remains an important body for assessing property taxes and advocating for taxpayer fairness. I will bring my financial experience and commitment to fiscal responsibility to the Board of Equalization to make sure legislators in Sacramento and throughout the state are spending your tax dollars efficiently.

As a Board of Equalization member, I will:

- Increase public input in how taxpayer dollars are spent by advocating to make the Tax Payer Bill of Rights hearing occur quarterly, instead of annually as it does now

- Host regular seminars throughout the state to help Californians learn best practices for filing their taxes, starting a business, and other fiscal responsibility strategies

My record of success on fiscal responsibility:

- Chaired the Board of Supervisors’ Budget and Finance Committee, which oversees appropriation ordinances and measures concerning bond issues, taxes, fees, and other revenue measures

- Served as President of the San Francisco Employee Retirement System (SFERS), managing a $20 billion pension fund

- Fiduciary member of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, which manages the half-cent sales tax that generates $100 million annually for transportation investments
